E28: Follow the Yellow Brick Road

I’ve always said that this podcast is meta in that I am on the Hourly to Exit journey with my listeners, my guests, my clients, and the many folks I encounter on LinkedIn, webinars, and in other forums. I’ve collected their wisdom in some super-charged market research, and as we enter 2023, I am drinking some of my own Kool-Aid. In this episode of the podcast, you’ll learn

  • Why the expert-to-client 1-1 service model is not scalable
  • The critical difference between income earning and wealth production
  • More about my plans to put more wealth in the hands of women through IP assets
  • The four key steps to IP-based revenue

I’m so excited to share my “what” and my “why” for the changes I am implementing this year. Please subscribe to the podcast to hear more about how to transform your expertise-based services business.

Erin Austin:

Hello ladies, welcome to 2023.

Erin Austin:

As we enter the second year of the Hourly to Exit podcast, I am super excited to

Erin Austin:

share some of the changes that we're implementing starting immediately.

Erin Austin:

So as I mentioned at the end of every episode, the podcast is very, I am

Erin Austin:

an expertise-based service provider, and I am working right alongside

Erin Austin:

you and my clients in the process of building and scaling a business

Erin Austin:

that I can hopefully sell someday.

Erin Austin:

So it's no surprise that I get inspired by my clients, by my fantastic and

Erin Austin:

generous hourly to exit podcast guest who I use as a source to answer

Erin Austin:

all of my questions as well as.

Erin Austin:

And from the many people that I get to hear from on LinkedIn and

Erin Austin:

webinars and other public forums.

Erin Austin:

So all of these inspirations have led me to rethink my business, and

Erin Austin:

I'm excited to share the new approach that we will be taking to get

Erin Austin:

more wealth in the hands of women.

Erin Austin:

Now, you know, That there is no profession more wedded to the hourly model than

Erin Austin:

lawyers, and I am guilty as charged when I went out on my own in the early

Erin Austin:

two thousands, you know, after being a general counsel at a big company, I

Erin Austin:

started the same way that many of you did.

Erin Austin:

Billing hourly?

Erin Austin:

Yes.

Erin Austin:

I sold my time.

Erin Austin:

I quickly changed to a flat fee model, but that was not

Erin Austin:

because of some grand strategy.

Erin Austin:

I just hated tracking my hours.

Erin Austin:

And that worked well for me and provided a comfortable income

Erin Austin:

and a comfortable lifestyle for me and my family for many years.

Erin Austin:

And then, as you know, came the circumstances that brought

Erin Austin:

on the unquenchable urge to do more meaningful work.

Erin Austin:

For me, that meant being part of creating a more equitable economy, and my sweet

Erin Austin:

spot is in the professional services area, so I pivoted to working with experts.

Erin Austin:

Of course, that has forced me to make sure that I am drinking my own Kool-Aid.

Erin Austin:

And the truth is that as of today, as I record this, unscalable

Erin Austin:

one-on-one services are the sole source of income in my business.

Erin Austin:

So I started asking how do I turn my expertise into scalable and

Erin Austin:

saleable intellectual property?

Erin Austin:

You can guess what Recommendations immediately started coming in.

Erin Austin:

Sell legal agreement templates.

Erin Austin:

Well, creating another agreement template site.

Erin Austin:

It's a hard no for.

Erin Austin:

Yes, I wanna increase my income.

Erin Austin:

Yes, I wanna decouple my income from my time, but equally

Erin Austin:

important is increasing my impact.

Erin Austin:

That's why we're here.

Erin Austin:

And selling legal templates alone would not further my mission.

Erin Austin:

So I've continued my one-on-one work.

Erin Austin:

Having many, many wonderful conversations both privately and publicly with

Erin Austin:

exceptional entrepreneurs who founded expertise-based businesses.

Erin Austin:

In all of those conversations, although I didn't recognize them as such at the time,

Erin Austin:

are fantastic market research, and with every conversation, the right direction

Erin Austin:

for me became increasingly clear.

Erin Austin:

I need to provide more education.

Erin Austin:

So in order to increase my impact, in order to get more wealth in the

Erin Austin:

hands of women who can then change the world, I need to reach more people

Erin Austin:

than I can on a one-on-one basis only.

Erin Austin:

I can only serve a limited number of clients on a one-on-one basis, and there

Erin Austin:

are many women who cannot afford, who are not ready for my one-on-one offering.

Erin Austin:

And that's where education comes in.

Erin Austin:

To increase my impact, I need to reach more of you.

Erin Austin:

So my goal for 2023 is to make sure that everyone has access to the knowledge

Erin Austin:

and resources required to create the foundation for building wealth.

Erin Austin:

That means building assets and assets in the expertise based business.

Erin Austin:

That means intellectual.

Erin Austin:

So in future episodes of the podcast and across all the platforms where

Erin Austin:

I communicate with you, please look forward to hearing more information that

Erin Austin:

focuses on creating that foundation.

Erin Austin:

That will be the basis for turning your expertise in intellectual property

Erin Austin:

and transforming your business from an income producer to a wealth builder.

Erin Austin:

There'll also be a lot more solo episodes that'll be focusing

Erin Austin:

on the four key steps to.

Erin Austin:

A new IP based revenue stream.

Erin Austin:

Those are creation, ownership, protection, and monetization.

Erin Austin:

So, As always, the guest experts on the podcast will continue to share

Erin Austin:

their wisdom on different aspects of the hourly to exit journey.

Erin Austin:

However, my offerings will change to focus more specifically on the

Erin Austin:

first step of that transition.

Erin Austin:

Turn your expertise in intellectual assets so that you can stop selling time.

Erin Austin:

. But before you can do that, you must own and control the intellectual

Erin Austin:

property created with your expertise.

Erin Austin:

You know, all of the experts that I've had the pleasure to speak with

Erin Austin:

have built successful businesses.

Erin Austin:

They've used their expertise to generate comfortable income.

Erin Austin:

They've built their reputations as experts.

Erin Austin:

Those are all wonderful accomplishments, but like me,

Erin Austin:

they're starting to ask what's next?

Erin Austin:

So maybe they're getting a little burned out from one-on-one work and

Erin Austin:

are looking to step back, or maybe they've hit a revenue ceiling and

Erin Austin:

wanna grow without working more hours.

Erin Austin:

Perhaps they're eager to get out of implementation and focus on strategy

Erin Austin:

and thought leadership, and all these experts are savvy enough to know that

Erin Austin:

they need to create assets to grow their business to the next level.

Erin Austin:

So I was having these conversations.

Erin Austin:

There was this specific question that I kept hearing over and over, am I

Erin Austin:

ready to create intellectual property?

Erin Austin:

Now, this was such a frustrating question for me to hear.

Erin Austin:

You know, I've heard other experts in the consulting space say that you need

Erin Austin:

to read just a certain level of authority before you're ready to create ip.

Erin Austin:

Well, that's simply not true.

Erin Austin:

Not only are you ready to create ip, you already are as an expert.

Erin Austin:

You are creating intellectual property every day.

Erin Austin:

Intellectual property is created every time you use your intellect and every

Erin Austin:

time you pay someone to use theirs.

Erin Austin:

I'm creating intellectual property as I speak to you right now.

Erin Austin:

. So the answer to the question, what's next?

Erin Austin:

What's next is making sure you own and control the intellectual property

Erin Austin:

that you create using your expertise.

Erin Austin:

That is the first, and it is the essential step to starting your hourly

Erin Austin:

to exit transition So expect to see offers that focus on this initial step.

Erin Austin:

And in particular for the B2B professional services provider, we

Erin Austin:

are going to be digging deep into the effective use and negotiation of

Erin Austin:

services agreements with your clients.

Erin Austin:

Because this is the number one way that service providers lose control

Erin Austin:

with the intellectual property.

Erin Austin:

If you don't understand what you're signing, you're not going to be able

Erin Austin:

to own and control the intellectual property that you are creating every day.

Erin Austin:

So we have to make sure that you understand that , that's step one, and

Erin Austin:

once we start owning and controlling the ip, then we'll be ready to add a new IP

Erin Austin:

based revenue stream to our business.

Erin Austin:

for most of us, myself included, of course, IP-based revenue

Erin Austin:

will be additive to our current one-on-one services revenue.

Erin Austin:

So in other words, we add that IP-based revenue stream to provide revenue

Erin Austin:

diversification in our businesses.

Erin Austin:

in addition to that, revenue diversification, there are a

Erin Austin:

number of other benefits from that IP-based revenue stream.

Erin Austin:

These include.

Erin Austin:

Obviously decoupling income from time, it helps you create a business that

Erin Austin:

can operate independently from you.

Erin Austin:

Your business moves from being expert, a k a time base to expertise, a k a IP based.

Erin Austin:

It enhances your revenue visibility, meaning you're better

Erin Austin:

able to forecast your revenue.

Erin Austin:

It decreases client concentration.

Erin Austin:

We know how dangerous having a few whale clients can be and is a pitfall

Erin Austin:

of many one-on-one service providers.

Erin Austin:

it increases your reach and impact.

Erin Austin:

Of course, it reduces performance risk, and it reduces collection risk.

Erin Austin:

It increases profitability.

Erin Austin:

It simplifies the sales process and my favorite, it transforms your business

Erin Austin:

from income producing to wealth building.

Erin Austin:

I believe in the value that each of you brings to your clients, and I'm

Erin Austin:

here to support you in your journey to building a business that thrives.

Erin Austin:

I'm so excited to be on this parallel adventure with you.

Erin Austin:

I'll be creating and releasing educational materials that will be my IP and my IP

Erin Austin:

based revenue stream that propels me.

Erin Austin:

My hourly to exit journey, and as you receive that knowledge and apply that

Erin Austin:

to your business, you will travel along your hourly to exit journey.

Erin Austin:

So I'd love to hear from you, please.

Erin Austin:

Any questions that you have about any of the topics that I talk about,
